Warning Signs of Suicide
•
Suicide threats
•Previous suicide attempts
•Alcohol and drug abuse
•Statements revealing a desire to die
•Sudden changes in behavior
•Prolonged depression
•Making final arrangements
•Giving away prized possessions
•Purchasing a gun or stockpiling pills
•Eating or sleeping too much or too little
•Pulling away from people and things
•Feeling numb or like nothing matters
•Having unexplained aches and pains
•Feeling helpless or hopeless
•Feeling unusually confused or forgetful; on edge, angry, or upset or worried or scared
•Fighting with family and friends
•Unable to get rid of troubling thoughts and memories
•Unable to perform daily tasks like taking care of your kids or getting to work or school
•Talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain
•Talking about being a burden to others
•Acting anxious or agitated; behaving recklessly
•Withdrawing or feeling isolated
•Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge
•Displaying extreme mood swings
An easy way to remember the warning signs of suicide is by remembering:

I Ideation (thinking about suicide)
S Substance abuse
P Purposelessness
A Anxiety
T Trapped
H Hopelessness
W Withdrawal
A Anger
R Recklessness
M Mood changes

Usually, there are four main protective factors:
  • being attached to others, such as family, peer groups, and school or work,
  • being committed to a person’s greater community such as organizations, community programs, and being a member of associations,
  • being involved in activities such as your job, school, and extra-curricular events, and
  • having a strong belief system that offers conventional morality and ways to foster respect for those around you.
